Refugees¡¯ Pack Inspection and Air and Ground Attacks
Refugees¡¯ Pack Inspection and Air and Ground Attacks

It was July 24th, 10:00 when the Chief of Staff for Strategic Planning of the 1st US Cavalry Division ordered his liaison office of the 8th Cavalry regiment on the front line. ¡°Keep refuges from crossing the battle lines. Fire at all refuges who try to pass the lines. But be careful on women and children¡±

Considering this control order, the 1st Cavalry Division, severely threatened by any possible guerrilla penetration into the refuges, seemed to take a hard-line strategy. Indeed, from July 24th, the US military opened fire at all people who tried to pass the battle line of the front.

In the early morning on July 25th, refuges found no US soldiers, so they went on toward Daegu. Passing by Hwangan, they arrived in Seosongwon where they were ordered again by the US military to walk on the rail road. On the rail road, US military searched the refuges¡¯ packs only to find nothing harmless materials except scythes and knives. While the refugees¡¯ packs were check closely, the US soldiers surrounded them on both sides. Then, a signalman taking to the wireless set was caught by some refuges.

By the time the pack search was over, US reconnaissance planes harbored the air before disappearing. Some minutes later, two fighters flew toward the place, while all US soldiers ran away, and shoot and machine-gunned many refuges, killing or injuring them. The survived hid themselves behind nearby acacia wood, small raceways and rail road in front of Nogun-ri as well as Ssangul.
