
The survived refuges hid themselves behind nearby acacia wood and small raceways to keep themselves from being shot to death. .
Some of them were forced to go to rail road in front of Nogun-ri and Ssangul, others came to Ssangul voluntarily to avoid the US military¡¯s ground and air attacks. No sooner many refuges gathered in Ssangul than the US soldiers set up machine guns far away from both entrances of Ssangul and opened fire toward the Ssangul tunnel.
The machine-gun attack continued from July 26th to the dawn on 27th.
Some men including the youth had no choice but to escape themselves in the darkness, living their family members. In Ssangul were only injured refuges and women and children. However, the US attack did not stop there, additional attacks stated on July 27th. The survived refuges in Ssangul had to pile the dead bodies at the entrance of the place or got to the bottom of the dead bodies to protect themselves from the shots.
Some refuges barely escaped Ssangul between the late night on 26th and the dawn on 23rd only to be shot to death in the US defense zone. Other survived refuges in Ssangul gave up any escape, just waiting for the situation to improve. Soldiers of the A company of 1st battalion, 7th Cavalry regiment witnessed the conditions of Nogun-ri Incident victims in Ssangul while patrolling an area, 1km away from Ssangul at 18:00 on 27th. According to them, about 100 civillians were killed and only a small number of people survived It was no different situation for the victims on even July 29th, the day, no one tried to escape.
The 1st battalion of 7th Cavalry regiment was under heavy attack, so they had to withdraw, following the Nogun-ri-Hwanggan road at 05:00 on 29th before the 2nd battalion retreated. The 2nd battalion began to withdraw at 05:30, passing through the Hwangan Station at 08:00 and occupied the expected next position at 08:45. The US troops withdrew toward south, leaving Ssangul, Nogun-ri around 05:00.
According to the survived, as North Korean soldiers approached the entrance of Ssangul, they could be saved. That means some refuges still stayed in Ssangul until afternoon of that day, even the US troops had gone.
