Nogun-ri Incident Information

A month after the Korean War broke out, the incident occurred from Jul. 25th to 29th 1950 in Haga-ri, Yeongdong-eup and Nogun-ri, Hwanggan-myeon, Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do province as hundreds of villagers were walking along a railroad after being ordered to evacuate their homes by retreating U.S. soldiers.

About 500 ~ 600 residents mainly from Jugok-ri and Imgye-ri were evacuating their homes to hide themselves in Imgye-ri and Anjeom on Jul. 23rd, according to the US army¡¯s order.

They finally arrived in Haga-ri via Jugok-ri on July 25th under the leadership of the US military. Following the US army¡¯s order, they camped along a watercourse in front of Haga-ri from the midnight on July 25th to the dawn on 26th. And on 26th, some of the residents went back to Seoul, while most of them continued to go southward along the Gyeongbu national road. Arrived in Seosongwon-ri, they were ordered by the US army to walk along the Gyeongbu rail road and their packs were checked. However, all of a sudden, the US military launched air attack on them, killing many residents. The survived Koreans hid themselves behind nearby trees, small raceways and acacia wood, saving themselves from additional air and ground attacks or according to the US military order until they gathered all in Ssanggul, Nogun-ri. But their misery showed no sings of ending. The residents locked in Ssangul came under attack for 3 days in a row by the US army. While most of the young people escaped from the scene, many women, children and the aged failed to save themselves. The weak were forced to be in Ssangul until the US military withdrew in the morning on July 29th. The narrowly escaped rest people could finally get out of Ssangul in the afternoon on that day only after the North Korean army arrived in Ssangul, Nogun-ri.
