8 Scenic Sites of Hancheon

The 8 picturesque places on Wollyu Peak, which seems to have been sculpted and erected in Wonchon-ri, Hwanggan-myeon, are referred to as the 8 scenic sites of Hancheon. The word ‘Hancheon’ comes from Hancheonjeongsa, where Uam Song Si-yeol (1607~1689) stayed.

Wollyu-bong

From the 400m Wollyu peak, the mountain ridge stretches to the west and east and contains a total of 6 peaks. It was named Wollyu, meaning a ‘peak where the moon stops,’ as a way to describe the beautiful view of the moonlight shining upon the cliff.

Sanyang-byeok

This is a wall created by the first and second peak of Wollyu Peak and due to its steep terrain, it is inaccessible by humans, but serves as the perfect habitat for many birds. It has a beautiful landscape with trees extending its roots between the rocks in the area.

Cheonghak-gul

This is a natural cave situated on the hillside below the Wollyu Peak and the foliage turns into a splendid red color in autumn. It was named ‘Cheonghak’ for being covered with blue cranes.

This is a cliff in front of the Wollyu Peak that has the appearance of a stone head, with the mountain ridge towering from a flatland.

Naengcheon-jeong

The spring from the sandy area in front of Beopjonam flows into two directions in the shape of the Chinese character for number 8, and the water is very cold even in the middle of the summer.

Beopjon-am

It’s been said that a small temple was situated in this area, and the temple is speculated to have been located in the present-day Wonchon Village in Hwanggan-myeon.

Sagung-bong

This is a mountain famous for its snowscape. It is situated on the north side of Hwanggan-myeon and its name means a ‘mountain serving as an ambassador for the nation.’

Hwaeon-ak

This is a mountain peak situated behind Hancheonjeong, and it was named Hwaeon due to the dense growth of flowers and trees in the area. Every spring, the area becomes covered with the azalea and royal azalea flowers.
